50 foot New Fish Tender for Norton Sound
May 2016 Coastwise Corporation has completed the detail design and construction support of a new fishing tender vessel for Norton Sound Economic Development Council (NSEDC). The T/V King Island transports fish in refrigerated cargo holds between Norton Sound salmon and crab fishing vessels and NSEDC's cannery in Unalakleet, Alaska. Coastwise Corporation provided a full structural design to ABS standards, and provided a modified hull design based on Bay Welding's traditional and successful commercial seiner.
The 50 foot long by 20 foot wide aluminum fish tender is an uninspected fishing vessel built to hold 28,600 pounds of crab or up to 57,200 pounds of salmon. The King Island is powered by twin 425 horsepower main engines that feature V-drive transmissions with tunnels for the propellers and rudders. Dual cranes and removable deck side bulwarks improve ease of loading and unloading at the tender's skiff deliveries. The King Island provides personnel quarters for up to 6 crew members with crew comforts including a full galley, laundry, and entertainment system.
The vessel was constructed by Bay Welding Services in Homer, Alaska, who also designed many of the mechanical and electrical systems. Coastwise Corporation was selected for this effort based on our extensive aluminum vessel design knowledge of vessel operations in remote Western Alaska.
